In a country with as much wealth as ours, it is certainly possible for every citizen to have their basic needs met. We would need to cut many other overfunded programs, including the military, to accomplish this. But it would be much simpler and less expensive to administer a Universal Basic Income than many of the social programs we have in place now. By cutting everyone the same check, many of the social issues we have now would be remedied.
I can see the merit of every citizen having their basic needs met in a nation as rich as ours. We do not need to be playing world police, funding other nations and meddling in world affairs when children in our own country are going hungry. This country is our business, the rest of the world is not.
The Federal, state and local governments fund so many convoluted agencies that cost a fortune to operate. Many of these agencies spend the vast majority of their funding just by employing people with our tax dollars just to operate the agency itself, and very little else goes out in many cases. For example, how much does it cost the SEC to regulate Elon Musk's free speech on Twitter? Completely unnecessary spending.
The military should be scaled back to protect our borders from anyone who threatens our country directly. The CIA, FBI, ATF and other law enforcement entities are overfunded as well, and in many cases they are spying on our own innocent citizens. There are way too many people in prison for things such as drugs or other petty crimes, which is costing our country a fortune. We can save a lot on all this, and it can be redirected to a Universal Basic Income program.
Setting up and administering a Universal Basic Income program run by, say, a restructured version of Social Security, would be multiples more efficient than the way we spend now. We could probably even save money this way. Moreover, it wouldn't matter if you're Black, transgender, gay, or anything else, as long as you're a citizen of the greatest country on Earth, you qualify.
As long as it's done right, then I am certainly a "Yes" on the issue of Universal Basic Income. It's the most efficient method to solving a lot of this nation's problems.
